Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of employment gains added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
