The fast bowler Set to Play a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, aside from his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
