The Global Health Body Raises Warning Over Acute Lack of Weight-Loss Jabs

Under a tenth of people that would benefit from weight-loss injections including Wegovy can access them, caution the World Health Organization as it issues its initial guidance on the therapies.

Considering in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide now classified as obese, it is calling for increased and just access to these injectable treatments.

Per projections, in excess of 2,000,000,000 could be obese by 2030 if no action is taken.

"Our new guidance acknowledges that excess weight is a long-term condition that can be addressed with holistic and ongoing care," remarked WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, insufficient output, and logistical bottlenecks are key barriers to universal availability to the injections that can help people shift considerable body mass, says the body.

Skinny Jab Shortage

Even in the present best projected outlook, the supply of GLP-1 therapies could only cover about 100 million people – fewer than 10% of eligible patients, as stated by the health organization.

The recommendation encourages governments and firms to expand access, by approaches such as licensing agreements.

A patent on semaglutide – the core ingredient of the drug Wegovy – is due to expire in several countries in 2026.

The Way Obesity Injections Operate

These medications imitate a body's own hormone to reduce digestion speed, suppress the appetite and boost the sense of being full so users consume fewer calories.

Individuals usually see weight reduction in the initial weeks of beginning the once-weekly jabs.

Studies indicates people may regain a significant portion a year later of halting the medication, when their normal hunger return.

Being carrying excess weight elevates your likelihood for contracting medical conditions, like diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and some malignancies.

Excess weight impacts individuals in countries worldwide and was associated with over three and a half million fatalities worldwide in 2024, per the WHO.
